The Internet of Things: What is It

Our day to day life is changing with the heaps of technologies that are being developed in our time. Yes, we cannot stop these disruptions!

So, what are these emerging technologies that are hyping the Gartner cycle? There are a lot of these to name – smart robotics, 3D printing, autonomous vehicles, wearable user interfaces, big data, gamification, cloud computing, mobile health monitoring, and the so-called machine-to-machine technologies (or the internet of things).

Defining “The Internet of Things”

The internet of things (IoT) is what people call the next big thing. This concept was first developed in the early 1980s at the Carnegie Melon University. Programmers could connect to a Coke machine using the internet to determine the status of the machine, figure out whether there would be a cold drink awaiting and deciding whether to visit the machine.

This smart technology is built around increased machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity through the use of cloud-based applications and sensors. Its intelligence and mobility will add value to our lives. For instance, putting intelligent stoplights on the streets would be beneficial as it will improve traffic flow optimization. It will ease up the traffic when the installed smart stoplights would respond to changes of the traffic condition.

The internet of things will continue to expand from our homes and business to our community and environment. So are you ready to adapt to this brilliant disruption?
